How is the price set?
The CBAM certificate price is calculated as the weighted average of the auction clearing prices of auctioned EU ETS allowances. The aim is to equalise the carbon cost carried by EU production and imports. Legal basis: Regulation (EU) 2023/956 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2548.
Throughout 2026 the price is published quarterly, with each quarter’s price applying to imports in that period. From 2027 the Commission moves to weekly prices, and from February 2027 all certificates are bought on a common central platform.
What this price means for you
If you export CBAM goods to the EU, you do not pay the bill directly — your EU importer buys the certificates. But the cost comes back to you in price negotiations: the higher your product’s embedded emissions, the more your importer pays per tonne.
Rough scale: for a product with embedded emissions of 1 tCO₂e per tonne, the current price implies a certificate cost of about €75.28 per tonne. If your verified actual data sits below the default value, the difference is a direct competitive advantage.
